Large Mid-Century Modern Brutalist Metal Cross & Chain Wall Hanging or Sculpture

About the Item

This large and substantial Mid-Century Modern handcrafted metal cross and chain was made by Talleres Monasticos of Cuerravaca Mexico in approximately 1960 in the Brutalist style. This workshop was comprised of Benedictine Monks who intricately handcrafted religious items for sale to tourists who were visiting the Monastery. This cross and chain is completely made of a collage of handcut, formed and patinated metals. The cross is composed of small and layered religious symbols such as the chalice, "PX", numbers and geometric shapes, etc. cut from thick metal stock and welded together to form a large cross. The chain is made up of rectangular shaped links held together with hand formed rings. This cross and chain can be hung in a variety of ways and for various applications such as a wall hanging or sculpture or between two rooms to define a space. In addition, the chain can be doubled up, etc. to vary the length. The cross is clearly signed on the back with the cartouche for Talleras Monesticos.
