Carved French Art Nouveau Hunt Plaque, Circa 1920
Located in Dallas, TX
In early 19th century France, the prevailing trend of architecture was known as Beaux-Arts. The style was based upon the fundamentals of neoclassicism, also incorporating Baroque and Renaissance ideas. Artistic endeavors of this period focused on the same principles, mainly rich texturing with very linear lines. In the late 1800’s, the French architect and historian, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, published his book, Entretiens sur l’architecture, which ushered in a new style known as Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau was inspired by elements in nature, with an emphasis on soft, supple lines and movement. With early Art Nouveau offerings, asymmetrical and stylized décor was paramount, as was non-parallel lines. Towards the end of the movement (after 1900), geometric shapes began to become popular, and decorative elements were more natural, as is the case with our hand-carved French hunt plaque...

Roman Architectural Column Biltmore New York Renaissance Revival 1910s Deco
By Warren and Wetmore 1
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Trio of Greco-Roman Renaissance revival architectural columns, circa 1910. In the Roman "Tuscan" order. Engaged columns. Gesso over wood. From the hasty 1981 demolition of the Biltmore Hotel, NYC. Measures approximately 90 inches x 9.5 inches x 3 inches. Located across the street from grand central terminal, the Biltmore Hotel was built in 1913 as part of the terminal city development, a vast complex of hotels and office buildings connected to the terminal and all owned by the New York state realty and terminal company, a division of the New York central railroad. The contract for design and construction, first awarded to Reed and Stem, was later taken over by Warren & Wetmore, the noted designers of grand central terminal, among other important projects. The 26-story neoclassical hotel featured a “stone base with arched openings, a gray brick mid-section and terracotta loggia and projecting cornice.” Its H-plan allowed almost all of its rooms outside exposure and it was one of the first buildings in New York city to use air rights, making the hotel significantly taller than surrounding buildings at the time. Among its well-known interior features was a direct connection to Grand Central Terminal, one of the first indoor swimming pools and Turkish baths, rooftop gardens on the sixth floor setback, and a Palm Court with a golden timepiece...
