"Orpheus Charming the Animals, " Monumental Bronze Relief with Nude Male, 1910
About the Item
Beautifully sculpted, cast and patinated, this monumental bronze sculptural relief depicts a nude Orpheus playing his lyre at the center, calming and charming the animals around him, including a lion to the left and a bear to the right. The nude male figure is beautifully detailed, with his muscled arms and legs clearly defined, his head bent down in concentration as he plays the instrument. The lion and bear are shown in profile, each noble and handsome as they walk forward, entranced by the music. The upper edges of the panel are stepped back in the classic Art Deco manner, so the sculptor is anticipating the Moderne style to come. The artist's monogram -- HR -- is present in the lower righthand corner, along with the date of the piece -- 1910. The sculptor's identity is not known, but he was likely German or Swiss. The reverse is equipped with two loops for hanging.
