Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...

French Renaissance Antique 16th Century Wall-mounted Sculptures

Marble relief, “Hypnos, Hera and Pasithea”, Fontainebleau, c. 1540
Located in Kensington, MD
During the Trojan War, Hera wanted to distract Zeus from the battle. He agreed to help her deceive Zeus for the hand of one of the Graces, Pasithea. He turned himself into a bird and, before Zeus could see him, hid in the tops of the trees on Mount Ida. He stayed hidden until Hera had seduced Zeus. When the father of gods was dulled by pleasure and sleep, Hypnos flew to Poseidon and urged him to increase his efforts in helping the Akhaians defeat the Trojans because Zeus was asleep and unaware of the Earth Shaker’s meddling. Poseidon strode through the ranks of soldiers and urged them on. Finally, his bellowing and screeching roused Zeus from his slumber but, in that short time, the Akhaians had turned the battle back on the Trojans. Hera’s trick had worked and Zeus never found out that Hypnos had betrayed him. The sinuous outlines and elongated proportions of these figures are typical of the mannerist style developed at the court of Francois I, King of France, by the Italian artists Francesco Primaticcio (1504-1570) and Rosso Fiorentino (1495-1540). The royal commissions attracted artists from all over Europe. The closest sculptural parallels with the present relief are the works of the technically brilliant (but mainly anonymous) stuccatori who decorated the walls and ceiling of the gallery of Francois I in his palace at Fontainebleau. The names of some of the sculptors who worked there are known from documents but their individual hands have not so far been identified; amongst them are Badouin, Le Roy, Seron, Ballors, Carnelles, Godard, Foucques, Du Val, Juste de Juste...
