"They Shall Not Pass" Relief Sculpture Marking Battle of Verdun with Male Nudes

$3,500

About

Honoring one of the most remarkable memorials to be issued after World War I, and perhaps the crowning achievement of America's greatest medallist and relief sculptor in the early 20th century, this unique bronze panel depicts both sides of a bronze medal sculpted by John Flanagan in 1920. The medal was commissioned by the United States as a gift to France, and the original strike is in the Lafayette Database of American Art in the French National collections. One side of the medal depicts two nude soldiers struggling to prevail, with the inscription "Ils Ne Pas Seront Pas" or "They Shall Not Pass," while the other wide depicts the 1380-vintage Chaussee Tower in Verdun which links fortress walls from the 13th and 14th centuries. The medal itself is a rarity, but this panel -- cast in Paris -- is probably unique. Flanagan worked for Augustus Saint-Gaudens for several years, is known for his Hudson-Fulton Celebration medal from 1909, and the Aphrodite-Swift Runners medal of 1932. Flanagan's monogram is visible beneath the righthand (obverse) image, and a foundry mark is located in the lower-right corner of the panel.
