About the Item
Rain drops wall installation by Sotis Filippides, 2022, 24K gold and platinum (real metals not leaf) entirely handmade unique piece. Measures: Approximate 80cm width 200 cm height x 15cm depth
This installation is composed by 18 individually hand-thrown stoneware elements with platinum and 24k gold lustre applied with third firing. In the artists’ words, this piece is inspired by the stages of raindrops hitting the surface of the water, aiming at visualising the splash through concentric circles.
The installation can be displayed and mounted both vertically or horizontally and it can also be commissioned bespoke according to the client’s needs and a specific wall space.
Sotis Filippides is a London based Greek ceramic artist. He works with grog clay, also known as fire sand and chamotte, which comes in small to medium sized particles and contains a high percentage of alumina and silica. He then applies to the raw clay a variety of oxides underneath the dry glazes to achieve unique and rather unpredictable results during firing sometimes even 3 or 4 times to reach the desired effect. Sotis often uses precious metals like 24-carat gold or platinum sourced from Italy in liquid form, which create a strong and beautiful contrast with the rough textured surfaces of the clay he uses. Sotis has a studio and showroom in London and has worked internationally with several galleries and with some of the most globally renowned interior designer firms.
