19th Century English or American Wallpaper Fireboard

About the Item

Antique original wallpaper fireboard. An interior scene combining elements of still life and animal art with a dog and cat depicted beneath a table displaying flora, fruit, bread, wine, and other forms. Original wood back replaced and now presented on rectangular wood board backing. --Fireboards were used in homes to cover the fireplace in the Summer months. This rare handpainted example is wonderful as it depicts an actual fireplace with tools pets and flowers.

These unique fragments of wallpaper come from Abraham and Mary Lincoln's bedroom in their Springfield home. The Springfield home in which the Lincolns lived was built by Rev. Charles Dresser who married Abraham and Mary in November 1842. Rev. dresser sold the home to Lincoln in 1844 for $1500.
