1847 Socialist, Satirical Broadside, Constitution of Belgium
Located in Norwich, GB
Broadside [‘Einblattdruck] Confusion, Contitution, Reaction 33.5 x 28 cm Issued separately for subscribers to the “Deutscher Bruesseler Zeitung”, 15 April, 18147 No example worldwide in OCLC!! During 1847, the kingdom's constitutional problems were characterised by an ever increasing intensification of rivalries between the two major political parties, the Catholics and the Liberals, a factor which brought an end to the Unionism which had been established in 1828. In the midst of growing unrest, in 1847, a number of pacifists, humanitarians, socialist, and Christian democrats had founded the Association Démocratique and sought the solution to the country's problems in the democratization of society and all people. To Brussels, its new residents, Karl Marx...

19th Century Aubusson Tapestry, Handmade, Ivory, Taupe, Cream
Located in Port Washington, NY
Aubusson tapestry is tapestry manufactured at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France. The term often covers the similar products made in the nearby town of Felletin, whose products are often treated as "Aubusson". The industry had probably developed since soon after 1300 in looms in family workshops, perhaps already run by the Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Aubusson tapestry of the 19th century managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry, although generally regarded as not their equal. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...

President Abraham Lincoln Genuine Bedroom Wallpaper, 19th Century
Located in Jersey, GB
Seven fragments of wallpaper from Abraham Lincoln's bedroom in Springfield, Illinois Before he left for Washington to become sworn-in as President in 1861, Lincoln and his family lived at 413 South Eighth Street in Springfield, the only home the President ever owned. These unique fragments of wallpaper come from Abraham and Mary Lincoln's bedroom in their Springfield home. The Springfield home in which the Lincolns lived was built by Rev. Charles Dresser who married Abraham and Mary in November 1842. Rev. dresser sold the home to Lincoln in 1844 for $1500. In the mid-1850s, the home was raised to a full story residence with the Lincolns' bedroom located at the north of the second floor. Future custodians of the house included Mrs Lincoln's nephew, Albert S. Edwards and his wife Mrs Mary Edwards Brown. These wallpaper fragments...

New and Vintage Wallpaper

Forget everything you believed about wallpaper (including mental images of your great aunt’s outdated decor). While paint has long had its place, there are fresh, modern designs these days in wallpaper that offer endless possibilities.

“There is undoubtedly an excitement surrounding pattern at the moment,” says Nick Cope, who cofounded Calico Wallpaper with his wife, Rachel. “Wallpaper has had certain connotations over the years. However, we are always focused on our mission to elevate wallpaper to high art.”

And today, paper is challenging paint’s long dominance. “In the late 1990s and early 2000s, everyone was painting and doing faux finishing,” says Sarah Merenda, founder of Merenda Wallpaper. But “there is currently a spotlight on wallpaper, and I find that people are interested in custom and large-scale designs. Printing digitally has been a game changer for the wallpaper world.”

Explore a variety of motifs and patterns in modern and vintage wallpaper options on 1stDibs today.
