About the Item

Pair of pharaohs candlesticks, Paris Empire period. Bronze finely carved and gilded, the six drums matte gilt-framed supporting three female heads capped Nemes (headdress of the pharaohs) and ending with three pairs of bare feet. The binets, sconces and the finely carved bases palmettos and stylized flowers. Original gilding double matte and glossy patina. Paris Empire period, circa 1805. Although a pair of torches to Nemes very similar to ours but was circular was delivered by Pierre François Susse in 1807 in the bedroom of the Empress at Rambouillet (P147 Book: le feu, le temps, la lumière Faton edition), we consider it more likely that this pair comes from the workshop Claude Galle. Indeed the six barrels matte gilt-framed, three heads and three pairs of feet are recurrent in the work of Claude Galle, with significant variations on the sets for many models delivered to the Imperial family: "Two pairs of candlesticks three heads, matte gilt-framed rod" for torches delivered September 3, 1808 for the service of the Empress at the castle of Compiegne. Or : "Gilt bronze candlesticks, hexagon, with figures in drapery" for a pair delivered in 1804 at Fontainebleau. The base hexagon is the heiress of the shape of the torches quiver Louis XVI, it is used very early in the consulat period and the beginning of the Empire and adopted the fashionable decor with heads Nemes from the drawings in France after the Egyptian Campaign led by Bonaparte between 1798 and 1801. An identical pair of our solid silver but is known to date, it was directed by the great Parisian jeweler Pierre Parraud, the punch allows the "premier coq" dating between 1798 and 1809.
