About the Item

This toy is Britains Ltd. Set #2094, "State Open Road Landau with H.M. The Queen and H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh". It depicts Queen Elizabeth II waving with a white-gloved hand while sitting beside Prince Philip in the open landau with decals of the Royal Arms and Order of the Garter on the sides. There are two coachmen sitting behind them and three postilions guiding the team of six Windsor Grey horses. The set was made in London of hollow-cast lead alloy and then hand-painted by the female staff. It was in production from 1954-1966. The Queen wears an ivory gown with a blue sash, a brown cape and headdress, and white gloves. The Duke of Edinburgh wears a dark blue naval uniform with gold trimmings and epaulets, and a cocked naval hat. The attendants have scarlet uniforms, and the horses have scarlet trappings. There are 15 pieces in the set: Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, the landau, two attached coachmen as one piece, three postilions, six Windsor Grey horses and two H-shaped stiff wire traces to connect the horses. This is the original configuration of the set, without its box. It is in lightly played-with, very good and very attractive condition. Since each piece was painted by hand, every set was slightly different. Today, this set is a fine example of by-gone British industrial folk art, and it is no longer used as a toy.
