Jean-Baptiste Tilliard (sometimes known as Jean-Baptiste I), son of the joiner Jean Tilliard and Angélique Mathelin, was admitted as maître menuisier in 1717; the same year he married Marie-Anne Barthélémy, who bore him six children, in particular Jacques-Jean-Baptiste, the noted chair maker. He set up a business, called “Aux Armes de France,” on the Rue de Cléry, between the workshops of Nicolas (and later François) Foliot and Louis Cresson.
His workshop was very important, as witnessed by the fact that he had eleven workbenches. He made pieces mainly on commission; his stock was limited to some fifty pieces of furniture, for the most part caned. He worked with the carvers Portebois, Damien Quitel and Nicolas Heurtaut, as well as Francois Roumier and Toussaint Foliot, by the intermediary of the Crown. He had business or subcontractor relations with the chair makers Pierre Berluy, Jacaues Desaîtres, Alexis Gauthier, Jean Mercier, Nicolas Heurtaut and, especially, with his brother Nicolas Tilliard and François Foliot, both menuisiers de la Maison du Roi. His furniture was sold by the marchand tapissiers Jean-Baptiste Guichard, Robert Legrand, probably the famous Sallior, and by the marchand mercier Julien-Etienne Olivier. It was certainly following his father’s death in 1728 that he obtained the title of maître menuisier du Garde Meuble du Roi, which he used regularly when supplying the Crown.
