Set of 8 French Louis XIV Style Oak Dining Chairs, circa 1920

About the Item

Produced in France, circa 1920, this set of eight oak dining chairs are in the style of Louis XIV. The straight backs and seats made from simple sets of turned and block carved wood make for a style that is still relevant and easy to work with in modern interiors. The period of Louis XIV was an important time in French history. Before the reign of Louis XIV, Italy and Spain were the most significant countries to affect European furniture styles. After Louis XIV came to power in 1843, France became a highly influential nation. Each chair back and seat are fitted with a blue/gray upholstery affixed with hundreds of brass nailheads. The stiles between the back and the seat are blocked, which mirror the shape of the back legs beneath. The front legs are turned, yet still retain an overall block shape. As typically seen in early Louis XIV chairs, the stretcher is in an H configuration and has been joined with round pegs. Both the stretcher and the connecting spindles are turned as well. Onion feet, which are bun feet that have slightly flattened bottoms, grace the front legs. The chairs are currently covered in a neutral color that can go with a variety of color schemes, but they should probably be re-upholstered to suit their new home. Our set of eight French oak dining chairs have high backs and amply cushioned seats, making these ideal chairs to place around a medium to large sized dining table.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Fabric is stained in several areas. Wear commensurate to age and use with minor losses and nicks to the wood. A few of the seats have light rubs and tears. Most nailheads remain, but at least one chair has one missing.
