About the Item

Guglielmo Pugi was born in Fiesole; he was an Italian sculptor whose studio was in Florence. He and his sons, Gino and Fiorenzo, functioned as Guglielmo Pugi and Sons, and the sons later operated as Fratelli G. and F. Pugi (also known as Pugi Brothers). As functioned in those years the Father's work became a family's work, and then some of them still work and create today. They were present at the 1901 World Fair in Buffalo and some of their sculptures are still in Buffalo parks today. Example works ("Statues, busts, and groups in marble") by J. and G. Pugi Brothers were displayed in the Palace of Manufactures in the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Working with Marble and Alabaster he was famous more outside than in Italy because the mosts of his work were bought from abroad, for important and rich buyers. In fact after the 18th century in Italy the economic opportunity of the italian market give the priority of the foreign market especially in the north america or in the north of europe; in the half of 19th century for example the movement noted as Grand Tour knows his most important growth. This beautiful sculpture carved in a very beautiful block of statuario marble, depict a young boy that is reading a book, not an one of a kind book but the most important book for a young guy: the abbecedario. As shown in the photos there are 4 letters engraved in the marbles pages such as A,B,C,D, that forms the word abbecedario that was the word in which there was knew the primary school book. There is a quote also in the very famous story of Pinocchio, by Collodi, and was the moment in which Pinocchio sold is important book abbecedario! Signed Pugi in the bottom back of the base.
