DETAIL Chrome-plated footrest. The Caprice/Passion collection of chairs has now been extended by the addition of two new stools. These are characterised by an aluminium stem base, while the seat reflects the features of the Caprice chair and the Passion armchair, respectively. Swivelling through 360 degrees, the seats of these stools always align with the chrome-finished foot-rest. Philippe Starck

Nome onnipresente nel mondo dell'architettura e del design contemporaneo, Philippe Starck ha creato di tutto, dagli interni di hotel e yacht di lusso a spazzolini da denti e tekettles. Tuttavia, per ogni progetto del suo variegato portfolio, Starck ha mantenuto una firma stilistica immediatamente riconoscibile: un look dinamico, elegante, fluido e spiritoso.

Figlio di un ingegnere aeronautico, Starck ha studiato design d'interni all'École Nissim de Camondo di Parigi. Ha iniziato la sua carriera di designer negli anni '70 decorando i locali notturni della città e la sua reputazione per gli interni vivaci e originali gli è valsa nel 1983 l'incarico da parte del presidente francese François Mitterrand di progettare gli appartamenti privati del Palazzo dell'Eliseo. Starck si è fatto conoscere a livello internazionale nel 1988 con il progetto degli interni del Royalton Hotel di New York, un ambiente straordinariamente originale caratterizzato da moquette e tappezzeria dai toni Jewell e da arredi con cornici in alluminio fuso dalle forme organiche. Nel 1990 ha proseguito con una riprogettazione altrettanto impressionante del Paramount Hotel di Manhattan, un progetto che presentava mobili in scala eccessiva e testiere che imitavano i dipinti di Old Masters.

Come il loro progettista, anche i mobili di Starck sembrano essere oggetto di attenzione. Disegni come la sedia club della serie J a forma di cuneo, l'ampia sedia Costes in mogano modellato, la provocante lampada da tavolo Ara o il sinuoso sgabello WW non mancano mai di suscitare l'attenzione. Altri pezzi di Starck fanno ammiccanti riferimenti postmoderni a design storici. La sua poltrona Louis Ghost in policarbonato dà un nuovo tocco ai mobili Luigi XVI; la sua sedia Out-In offre una rivisitazione futuristica della classica sedia inglese con schienale alto. Ma nonostante il suo estro, Starck mantiene una visione populista del design.
