In this bold, large-format still life painted circa 1955, Charles Levier fuses Cubist structure with his unmistakable modernist sensibility. THE ARTIST:
Born in Corsica in 1920, Charles Levier developed an internationally recognized career as a modernist painter, known for his stylized still lifes, cityscapes, harbors, and figurative works. He studied at L'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs where he was influenced by mentors André Lhote and Georges Rouault.
After serving as a military liaison during World War II, Levier divided his time between France and the United States, building a successful postwar career with solo exhibitions in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. His distinctive style — bold outlines, Cubist geometry, and richly layered color fields — was shaped by modernist pioneers including Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
Levier’s work was collected by cultural icons such as Frank Sinatra, Jackie Kennedy, and Dean Martin, and remains in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Modern Art (Paris), the Menton Museum, the Atlanta Museum, and others.
Levier passed away in 2003, leaving behind a compelling body of work that bridges French modernism and American midcentury design. His paintings continue to captivate collectors seeking striking compositions with refined structure and atmosphere.

Charles Levier
Charles Levier è nato il 26 gennaio 1920 in Corsica. He era figlio di un padre francese e di una madre americana. Il fascino per il colore e la forma lo portò, all'età di 17 anni, a frequentare l'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs di Parigi per studi privati. Con l'arrivo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Levier prestò servizio nell'esercito francese in Nord Africa, diventando poi ufficiale di collegamento con l'Office of Strategic Services degli Stati Uniti. I dipinti di Levier si trovano in innumerevoli collezioni private e pubbliche. Tra questi collezionisti ci sono il signore e la signora Peter Martin, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, il barone Edmond de Rothschild, il principe e la principessa Poniatowski, la signora Dan Topping, il signore e la signora Frank Martin e molti altri. Levier è morto nel 2003.
