Neo Archeological Micromosaic Bracelet with Gryphons & Putto, 1860's

About the Item

Period: 19th century Provenance: Italy Diameter 62 mm Weight: 59,7 gr The bracelet can be ascribed to the goldsmith's manufacture of the 19th century, more precisely it can be traced back to the 1860s when a great fervour spread towards techniques and styles derived from the Roman and Etruscan eras and of which Castellani was the greatest promoter. The jewel, therefore, in Neo archaeological style, is made of 18-karat yellow gold as evidenced by the mark placed on the inside, where it is flanked by the manufacturer's mark. The bracelet consists of a rigid, elegant and sumptuous frame, with the inscription "Vita Dulcis" (lit. "sweet life") affixed to the lower part; the upper part, however, features a delightful micromosaic with a particularly rare and valuable decoration: against a bright blue background, gryphons and scrolls flank the face of a winged cherub. The bracelet, however, is further embellished with an applique with scrolls and gold filigree, in which an additional micromosaic is placed: here a face crowned by vine leaves is enclosed within a clypeus and surrounded by additional vine leaves and bunches of grapes, emblems that lead to identifying the subject with Bacchus, god of mysteries and vitality. The bracelet is completed by filigree motifs that unfold in the perimeter areas, by scroll decorations such as those that complete the micromosaic in the lower part and by a shell decoration that connects the two micromosaics in the centre. The jewel is preserved in excellent condition and placed inside the original velvet-lined shagreen case.
