A wide and Fanciful Georgian Berlin Iron Bracelet
About the Item
This lush Berlin Iron Geiss Bracelet c. 1830 completely original. The design is one never before seen in our professional years of collecting iron jewelry nor is it pictured in the books showing Berlin Iron as has most of our jewelry . Links of interconnecting iron vines form frilly bows with lyre-like central spokes.
The clasp too is frilly with the addition of a central floral appliqué in iron. Though the bracelet appears like an artists rendering in charcoal, it is three dimensional, striking, and gorgeous.
Berlin Iron jewelry is extremely rare and is to be found in museum collections mainly in Europe. The Victoria and Albert holds many examples both whole jewels and fragments. Created to honor the patriotism of German aristocracy during the Napoleonic invasion of Germany, the examples that remain have become precious jewelry that is a lasting memory of an historic period. The German treasury was drained by the war. The government appealed for gold. Wealthy gave their gold jewels to support their nation at war and received iron jewelry in its stead. Bracelet length 7 inches. Wearable length 6 1/2 inches. Height of links 2 inches. Height of Clasp 2 1/2 inches
