About the Item

A fine and impressive antique Victorian 0.62 carat emerald and 18 karat yellow gold mourning brooch; part of our antique jewelry and estate jewelry collections This impressive antique Victorian mourning brooch* has been crafted in 18k yellow gold. This impressive brooch features a step cut emerald four claw / prong set in relief to the centre. The feature emerald is surrounded by a further six step cut emeralds four claw / prong set in relief within wirework scroll decoration. The pierced decorated frame has a three dimensional quadrilateral shaped form ornamented with an opposing scroll decorated border accented between each scroll with simple bead decoration. The reverse of the brooch features a push fit frame with a glass insert behind which a personal photo or memento can be displayed. The Victorian mourning brooch secures to the reverse with a hinged pin and hook fastening. This 1880’s brooch is supplied with an independent diamond grading report card. This impressive Victorian mourning brooch has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18k gold. "Rather than regarding inclusions in coloured stones as harmful, in small sizes and numbers that do not in any way detract from their beauty, they should be regarded as adding to desirability, for they provide identifying characteristics." NOTE*: The Victorians honoured their dead with elaborate mourning traditions often deeply entwined with outward appearance, and thus, clothing and jewelry. Mourning jewellery came in all shapes, sizes and forms; rings, brooches, pendants, and watches were often decorated with black enamel, jet, agate, or other dark gemstones with only a few exceptions. Wear consistent with age and use. This brooch is fine quality, set with natural emeralds. The Victorian brooch is a very good gauge of gold and is in excellent condition. One of the emeralds has a small chip to corner this in no way detracts from the appearance of the brooch.
