This mysterious double pinstem De Ambrosi Contemporary Brooch, made in Italy in the Contemporary Era, circa 2010s, features deeply fascinating organic forms, crafted in 18K white gold and set with a host of sensual gems. Iridescent mother-of-pearl weighing approximately 3.15 carats fleshes out the five volumetric teardrops. These forms cling to a vertical axis yet float ethereally in various directions. The shapes and their orientation conjure exotic underwater plants from the depths of the sea. Round brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 5.51 carats of G-H color and VS clarity highlight the curved forms in a similar swoop. Indeed, the diamonds in this context look like bio luminescence. Each lustrous form is punctuated at the point where it emanates, with a similarly shaped cluster of round-cut emeralds weighing approximately 1.30 carats. The color play is rich and unusual, suggesting a peacock feather. Peacock feathers were endlessly depicted in the Art Nouveau period (1890-1914), including notable abstracted treatments by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926). Artists were on the hunt for something new, and in seeking the curvaceous and twisting lines of nature’s flora and fauna, had discovered the most perfect and divine shape of them all: the universally inspiring and glamorous peacock. De Ambrosi flowers and natural forms certainly have their roots in the flowing, sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau period, but have blossomed into a sophisticated, at times otherworldly, style all their own. The Italian jewelry house was established in 1949 by Remo Deambrosi in Valenza, Provincia di Alessandria, Piedmont. The house was highly successful and in just half a century it was renowned for its superior craftsmanship; particularly in lapidary, creating splendid hand-carved cabochon shapes. Their aesthetic seeks to capture light dancing on beautiful gemstones which is at times surrealist or iridescent, as exemplified spectacularly in this out-of-this-world abstract contemporary brooch.
