Antique Silver Portuguese Paste Pendant, 18th Century

About the Item

From my personal collection, a pendant brooch of Black dot paste of every shape and size is set in rounded pillow back foiled sterling, made in Portugal where, together with France, the finest paste jewelry was created in 1800 and earlier. The rounded back and variety of black dot stones are indicative of a prized paste maker of the period. There was no electricity at the time. Stones were foiled and faceted to capture the light of candles, and they did. They shone like diamonds, glittering with the candlelight. This was not a costume piece of jewelry created to copy a gemstone pendant. This quality paste from this period was an art form. Royalty were the owners of such pieces and had their own dedicated paste makers who could make the jewelry to endure the elements as this pendant has. It should be worn high at the neck on a lovely ribbon. We show it too low. The last photograph comes from "Georgian Jewelry" the definitive text written by Ginny Dawes and Olivia Collings. This elaborate pendant is a photo from the era. On page 16 and pictured here is a similar pendant/brooch to ours, from their major collection. Excellent condition. All original

Brooch in 18 karat rose gold, eagle head hallmark, and silver. Charming antique jewel with transformation, it represents a knot moved and decorated with rose- cut diamonds. A pin with a safety hook allows to wear this jewel as a brooch. This part is removable thanks to a small screw. A hook allows you to attach a tassel made of a lobster clasp adorned with a fleur-de-lis pattern set with rose-cut diamonds. This set is removable but can also allow to attach to the brooch another pendant to the lobster clasp or to slip a chain to wear the set as an antique pendant. Height : 3,5 cm approximately, width : 3 cm approximately, thickness : 11 mm approximately. Total weight of the jewel : 9,7 g approximately.
