There is something quite special about this antique Mourning brooch, it may be the neatly woven chequer board two colour hairwork, the swivel action or the elaborate scrolling gold frame. Maybe it's all of those things and more, what do you love about this piece? It is an oval shaped brooch with a central glazed locket compartment with a swivel action, the locket centre can be spun around to each side, one side featuring a plaited mix of two colours of hair and one with tightly woven black hair. The hair is bordered by a textured yellow gold rim within and the outer frame is a rich 9kt rose gold. It fastens with an old c type clasp and pin fastener, the pin itself is base metal. Such a beautiful and unusual antique Mourning piece, perfect for the collector. Marks and era: Unmarked, tests as 9ct gold, Victorian era, C1870s.
