About the Item

During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. This incredible winged scarab pin from the Art Nouveau era (ca1900) is an outstanding example of Egyptian revival jewelry! Crafted in 14kt yellow gold, this magnificently detailed piece has a detailed 3-dimensional design which features vibrant gemstones and beautiful Etruscan wirework. A hand-carved lapis lazuli scarab beetle rests at the center, featuring a gold "T" formation resting atop its body. Set within the "T" are several fine, prong set old Rose Cut diamonds which perfectly compliment two bezel set Rose Cut diamonds acting as the beetles' eyes. Framing the scarab on either side are two spectacular gold wings which display a layered feather look adorned by vibrant green enameling, Rose Cut diamonds and bezel set rubies. The wide outer wings have an alternating design of smooth and textured feathers, each lined with a fine twisted wirework frame. Two golden creatures emerge from either side of the scarab, their curled tails framing the base, their heads protruding at the sides and each adorning a single ruby eye. Fine Etruscan wirework and beadwork decorates the pin throughou, adding further texture and depth. On the back of the piece is a secure bar pin and clasp, perfect for fastening the brooch to a favorite garment. Additionally, the piece has several markings including a small makers mark on the back, "No. 144187" at the clasp, and another stamp along the bar of the pin. An exceptionally fine piece, this impressive pin would make a perfect addition to any Egyptian Revival collection! The pin measures 1 1/4" tall, has a 1 1/8" wingspan, and is 3/8" thick. The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or enameled details. The carved lapis scarab, rubies, and diamonds are all intact and the pin clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
