THE COMBINATION OF THE JEWEL TONE PASTEL COLORS OF THE ENAMEL WITH THE GORGEOUS DESIGN IN 14 KARAT GOLD CREATES A TRUE MASTERPIECE OF THE ART NOUVEAU PERIOD. PLIQUE-A-JOUR is a French term that translates to “letting in the daylight” and defines a type of transparent enamel that has no backing. Creating Plique jewels requires a master artisan with extraordinary skills. Plique jewels are highly sought after and beloved by collectors. Similar to a stained glass window, the design has a metal outline filled with various colored transparent, glass-like enamels. First discovered in the 15th century by Benvenuto Cellini, plique-à-jour was rediscovered in France circa 1900 and soared to new heights during the Art Nouveau period. Rene Lalique created his unrivaled plique-à-jour jewels by hand. Plique-à-jour provides a natural translucency, similar to that found in nature, which makes it ideal for rendering leaves, flowers, insect wings and other gossamer illusions. This technique highlights and features the play-of-color provided by light passing through the enamel. Undoubtedly, plique-à-jour was a critical innovation in developing the Art Nouveau aesthetic in jewelry. The brooch is 1 7/8 inches (48mm) wide and 15mm tall. The brooch is 14 Karat Gold.

Located in New York, NY
A rare Art Deco Egyptian Revival masterpiece of a Winged Scarab Insect Brooch done in Plique a Jour Enamel over Silver. The Museum Quality brooch depicts a winged Scarab beetle, one of the signature motifs of the Egyptian Revival movement. The brooch is done with extraordinary Purple and Green iridescent Plique a Jour Enamel. Plique Enamel requires the skills of a master artisan to create. When finished, the Plique enamel creates a see through enamel which allows light to shine through, reminiscent of a stained glass window. This brooch is a masterpiece of the technique and one of the most beautiful pieces we have seen. The brooch pin is Silver with a gold wash. It dates to the Art Nouveau to Art Deco period, circa 1880-1920. It has its early C-clasp. The brooch could be easily converted to a pendant necklace if desired. Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time...
