Corneille Art Jewel Sapphire, Diamond and 18 Karat Gold "Bird" Brooch 2008

About the Item

An artist-made jewel, this one-of-a-kind, large, sapphire, colorless diamond, and 18 karats yellow gold "Bird" brooch sculpture is by Corneille (Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo) 2008. Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo is well known for his bold paintings and prints. This unique gold and gem brooch looks like it flew right out of one of his paintings. The bird's personality and movement are captured here as in each of Corneille's unusual bird brooches. The brooch sits perfectly on the body when worn. It is signed, numbered, and dated. The item also comes with a certificate of authenticity from Fondation Guillaume Corneille (2019). Corneille was a member of several important artistic movements of the late 1940s. He promoted his then-untraditional approach to creating art, frequently described as "imaginative and poetic... characterized by an eccentric use of color and his placing of familiar subjects, such as cats, birds, and women, in mythological or juvenile settings." (WHERE IS QUOTE FROM? )This bird brooch is a perfect example of the ways in which Corneille brought his approach to painting to his jewelry design process. Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, also known as Corneille (1922-2010), was born in Belgium to Dutch parents. At age 12, he moved back to The Netherlands with his family, where he would later study at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam in 1940. At this time Holland was under occupation by Germany, and Corneille entered a conservative Dutch art world, heavily influenced by German tastes and propaganda. Following the end of the war, however, Corneille was at the forefront of a numerous Expressionistic artistic groups that would come to revolutionize Dutch art, and the Scandinavian art world as a whole. He was a founding number of the REFLEX Movement and the Experimentele Groep in Holland in 1948, and later a founder of the COBRA Movement in 1949. Corneille was an active member of the COBRA, as a painter, but also as a writer of poetry in the COBRA Magazine. The group dissolved in 1951, and Corneille moved to Paris, which would become his home base and final resting place.
