How could anyone resist such an expression from this horse-adjacent hoofed creature? Our four-legged friend has a disarmingly exuberant air as he stopped to pose for this Contemporary Enamel Diamond Figural Donkey Brooch in his likeness, made in the Contemporary era, 2010, as if to say, “Hey, look how high I climbed!” With a friendly upturned tail and a fancy side-swept mane adorned with micro pavé diamonds, our treasured donkey support animal is perched on a half-circle mound to match, beside two charming flowers further down the slope. Donny’s eyes—that is what we have named him, but he will respond to what you may want to call him, provided the naming ceremony is charming and includes two flowers—anyway, Donny’s expressive insistent round eyes of two red rubies instill us with a can-do attitude about everything, and we could not be more grateful for his sincerity and innocence. The artist captured all of Donny’s charm as well as his good looks, including his striped, brown coat and his striped honey-colored face, realized in enamel. Luckily for us, as It is rude to look a gift horse in the mouth, Donny is depicted in full smile, showing his excellent bottom teeth. The single pinstem brooch in his exact likeness which he sat for (well, stood of course, but the term is “sat for” when you serve as the subject for a portrait) measures 1.25 x 2.25 inches (3.17 x 5.72 cm) and is crafted in 18k yellow gold. The reverse side of the piece indicates skillful artisanship, presenting a beautiful gold lattice with repeating almond-shaped cutouts. You will be very happy to know as we are to report, that the brooch is not a posthumous portrait. Donny is still very much alive and kicking. You know, because he is a donkey and they do love to kick up their back legs for fun and stuff.
