Emerald Wheat Cross Chanel : Goossens

About

So many of Chanel's favorite motifs remained with her and were distilled throughout her long life. The "cross" and "wheat" motifs from the 1930's both come into play in this massive brooch with its flawed emerald pate de verre jelly stone center. Chanel kept representations of wheat throughout the Rue Cambon apt. To her they represented life and charity.

Here Goossens twists the bronze wires and flattens them to texturize them. He then gathers them tightly around the center stone and decorates with gilded shot to give the effect of plentiful sheaves of wheat emanating from the emerald.

Easy to describe, much more difficult to render. The ultimate effect is, of course, stunning. Very french and very Chanel in design and concept. This brooch exudes Chanel's "DNA" to the core.

Signed: CHANEL circa 1960s. 4" x 3" wide.
