Micromosaic Plaque of a Landscape Scene, Rome, circa 1800.

About the Item

Antique micromosaic of an Italian landscape scene with two sentries in the foreground standing watch by the water with a town on the right, and a curving tree on the left and mountain peaks in the distance. This could be a scenic view of the Bay of Naples. The plaque measures 2 3/16th inches by 1.5 inches. A similar micromosaic, set on a snuff box, can be seen on page 197 of The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics, by Jeanette H. Gabriel, Philip Wilson Publisher. Our micromosaic is probably older than the one in the Gilbert Collection. the addition of a decorative border, millefiori, around the edge, with three colors, the placement of the square tesserae in a horizontal pattern with no attempt by the artist to have the tesserae follow the curve of the blue sky as it meets the distant mountains, and finally the gaps between the tesserae all point to a late 18th century to early 19th century micromosaic. This piece, in fine condition, would work well as a brooch. We would suggest delicate prongs to hold this small "jewel", with a pinstem assembly on the back. We have one of the largest collections of micromosaics offered for sale. If our reader is searching for a particular motif, we would be happy to list it here for your consideration. From very large wall hangings, to desk objects such as paperweights to the smallest of brooches, one needs only to ask. All items sold are accompanied by a detailed Statement of Value. As always, we guarantee all of pieces to be exactly as represented.  Over the decades of our stewardship as a small but exemplary purveyor of the jeweler's art, we have strived to offer a fine and authentic selection, in excellent condition, of collectible jewels from all highly sought time periods at competitive prices and even lower prices, if possible. In the process we have had the extraordinary good fortune of meeting remarkable people - some collectors, others just extremely interesting individuals who have taken the time and effort to examine their lives and select things that tend to make them smile, or admire, or just wonder at the exciting, endlessly creative and nuanced panoply of jeweled artifacts.

Victorian King Charles Spaniel Dog Micromosaic Brooch, circa 1870
Located in London, GB
Fine quality micromosaic, depicting a King Charles Spaniel dog on his cushion, set as a brooch in 18ct gold. Dogs were a symbol of faithful love. The King Charles Spaniel breed was extremely popular amongst the English aristocracy, especially during the Victorian period, when Queen Victoria herself doted upon her spaniel, Dash. Although the Greeks and Romans had used mosaics for many centuries, it was the Italians who developed the art of micromosaics in the Vatican at the end of the 18th century. The Napoleonic expedition to Egypt in 1798 led to a great revival of classical interest and was reflected in the subject matter of the micromosaics, many images came from Roman murals...
