Mistletoe Brooch Attributed to Vever for Lalique

About

A French Belle Époque "Mistletoe" brooch, the design attributed to René Lalique for the House of Vever, circa 1894. This brooch comes in a Vever box bearing the inscription "Grand Prix Exposition Universelle 1889", attesting to the company's sterling reputation. Lalique created designs for such illustrious French houses as Aucoc, Boucheron and Vever even after opening up his own business in 1885. There are two original Lalique designs of mistletoe jewels dated 1892-1894 pictured in Sigrid Barten's landmark book on the jewelry of René Lalique. Mistletoe, a potent symbol of rebirth in Norse mythology and a celebrated source of everlasting love and fertility in Celtic folklore, appears here as a sleek and stylized brooch. Set in silver-topped gold, the brooch features 10.30 carats of old mine-cut diamonds, and two natural pearls that measure 8.10mm and 8.25mm and serve as the berries of the highly symbolic branch. Circa 1894.
