Fantastic details have been delicately carved in blue grey lava from the curls of the hair to the cleft in the chin. The lava came from an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in the late 1870's. Note the quality of the cameo. The woman's mouth is a rosebud and her features serene. On either side of her are two men, both with curls and distinct features. One seems to be middle age and one a bit older. To me, they appear slightly menacing, but are still smiling. At a later time this brooch was discretely and skillfully backed with silver to preserve the edges of the carving Excellent condition
