Antique 14K Gold Horn of Plenty Filigree Cannetille Brooch
About the Item
An antique 19th century 14 karat gold brooch created with filigree and cannetille work. This brooch typically features fine gold wires or thinly hammered sheets. Jewelry with cannetille was very popular in the 1900's, particularly in the 1820's and 1830's. Motifs included tendrils, scrolls, coils, beehives and spider-like rosette ornaments, as shown by this amazing brooch. The center of the brooch features a decoration of two hollow "goat horns" - this theme "cornucopia" also known as horn of plenty - symbolizes the goat horn filled with fruits and vegetables and used as a decorative motif symbolizing abundance.
These types of ornaments were part of the Dutch ear iron. The ear iron headdresses were very common in the Dutch countryside since the 16th century. The wealthier the family was the more lavish the gold headdress was crafted. This part of a head-piece ornament is crafted into this gorgeous brooch.
The brooch is in very good condition and of high quality.
