Cufflinks by Sigi Pineda in Rosewood and Silver with Tie Bar, Wood Intact

About the Item

Born in Taxco, Mexico in 1929, Sigi Pineda was ten years old when he began to apprentice with local jewelers, learning the craft of silversmithing. He created his first work for the legendary design studio, Margot de Taxco, founded in 1937 by American artist Margot Van Vorhies Carr. Pineda opened his own workshop at age twenty-three. Today, he is considered one of the masters of the Taxco Modernist Movement with his breathtakingly original designs. The cufflinks and tie bar here are signature pieces by the artist and exemplify what Modern Silver Magazine noted: "Sigi's version of organic modernism was inspirational in developing and establishing a new design sensibility in Taxco, Mexico modernism, adding to the established Mexican art vocabulary." While I have come across several examples of these cufflinks, the wood is frequently split or damaged, and it's rare to encounter the cufflinks together with the tie clip, let alone in such pristine condition. Created by Pineda circa 1950, the silver and rosewood cufflinks measure 26.18 mm x 18.83 mm, while the tie clip comes in at 42.93 mm x 9.93 mm. There are light scratches on the silver which could easily be buffed clear away but I have left them as-is. The wood is in excellent condition and has not split, chipped, cracked or broken over time. The hardware all works properly and this exquisite and very rare set of iconic cufflinks and tie bar are ready to wear. We've all seen wood incorporated into jewelry lately (bracelets and rings made from wood and set with gemstones) but Señor Pineda was about seventy years ahead of the trend. These would make a perfect gift for a groom or best man, or would serve equally well as a treat for one's self. Organic, crisp, modern and iconic, these original Sigi Pineda rosewood and sterling silver cufflinks are fully hallmarked.
