Description: Cut steel earrings from the Georgian period, were made of individually faceted and polished steel bits, each of which has been riveted in a specific place in the design. A jewelers hand did each step of this time intensive work. Only early cut steel jewelry is made of the various sizes of steel bits that you see in these earrings. The tiny steel "diamonds" are placed strategically so as to reflect maximum surrounding light. The light in the early 1800's was provided by candles. In that romantic illumination, as well as in the electric light we have today, the steel sparkles like diamonds. It is mind boggling that individual bits the size of pin heads were faceted and set by the perseverance and work ethic of man. It is a miracle to find jewelry of this age intact and in fine condition. These earrings maintain their luster and have no rust. There is some discoloration on the back plate appropriate to the age of the earring. The color change is not damage and can be cleaned. The earrings are 2 1/2 inches long, mobile and light in weight. Width at the widest is a spot under 1/2 inch.
