About the Item

A new type of woman emerged in the 1920s: The flapper or garçonne. With short, though elegantly curled hair, wearing knee-length dresses and distinctly androgynous silhouettes, the flapper frequented bars and danced to jazz music, defying old-fashioned social conventions of femininity. Long earrings, which defiantly emphasized the cropped hairdos, were the jewel du jour. Christian Schad's painting "Lotte" (1927), now in the collection of the Sprengel-Museum Hanover, shows a young flapper in a nightclub. Lotte, the sitter, is dressed in an ensemble inspired by gentlemen's fashion, made up with dark eyeshadow and wearing long green earrings – cool and self-confident, valuing personal freedom and self-expression above all, the archetype of the modern woman. This pair of earrings, as glamorous as they were once rebellious, may have once belonged to someone like her. Two drop-shaped briolette tourmalines of vividly green colour are the focal points of the earrings, which are designed as slim pendulums. Each is articulated thrice to guarantee soft and elegant movement on the ear, making them perfect accessories for the Charleston dance. Excellently preserved, the pair is a picture-book example of luxurious Art Déco earrings. They will be delivered with the independent certificate of a gemological institute. MATERIALS 2 natural green tourmalines, drop shape, briolette cut, approx. 5.80 ct altogether, each approx. 1.2 cm / 0.47 in long 14 diamonds, old European cut, approx. 0.34 ct altogether, Top Wesselton/G – Wesselton/H, vsi–p1 6 diamonds, rose cut, approx. 0.03 altogether, good colour and clarity Platinum on 14k resp. 585/000 gold, rhodium-plated HALLMARKS Hallmarked "585" on the earring backs. CERTIFICATE Delivery with the house certificate of Hofer Antikschmuck, issued by an art historian, as well as with detailed independent certificate of the DEGEB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Edelsteinbewertung/German Association for Gemstone Evaluation) in Idar-Oberstein dated 12.02.2019. Estimated replacement value: 7.830,- Euro.
