About the Item

Circa 1870s, 14k. This captivating pair of Egyptian Revival earrings feature hardstone scarabs framed by eighteen-karat gold pillars. Popular in London, the most famous jewelers of the day all designed archeological jewelry; these earrings are exceptional examples of the genre. Whether worn with ripped jeans or a ball gown, these one-of-a-kind nineteenth-century jewels will create an understated fashion narrative that lends intrigue and mysticism to any look. Impeccably made in the 1870s, they are in excellent condition. Noted: the original backs were changed to simple posts in the sixties, we have added omega backs so they fit securely. Noted: Hardstone can be any of the many quartz varietals or jade, granite, etc. In this case it is probable that the rough stones were attractive specimens from the estate of the family this piece was made for. This is especially true of families that owned country properties in the north of England or Scotland where interesting stone abounds. Personalizing jewelry, desk accessories, or even furniture with mineral samples from one's own estate was popular from the Georgian era and well into the Victorian period.
