Rare Antique 18th Century Portuguese Sequilé Diamonds Yellow Gold Drop Earrings

About the Item

Rare Antique Late 18th Century Portuguese Sequilé Drop Earrings, Yellow Gold with Rose-Cut Diamonds. A refined and evocative pair of late 18th century Portuguese sequilé earrings, executed in rich yellow gold and composed as a vertical cascade of delicately articulated scrolling links. Each element is finely worked in openwork repoussé, creating a lace-like architecture that feels both weightless and structurally precise. Set throughout with ten rose-cut diamonds, the stones are intentionally understated—glimmering softly rather than sparkling—allowing the sculptural quality of the gold to remain dominant. This restrained use of diamonds is characteristic of Iberian jewelry of the period, where goldsmithing virtuosity often took precedence over gemstone display. The composition culminates in a gently swelling pear-shaped terminal, lending a subtle sense of movement and elongation when worn. The articulation between each segment ensures fluidity, so the earrings respond naturally to motion, catching light in shifting, nuanced ways. Sequilé work, deeply rooted in Portuguese decorative tradition, reflects a synthesis of Baroque exuberance and local craftsmanship. These earrings embody that dialogue—ornate yet controlled, decorative yet purposeful—offering a rare survival of a distinctly regional aesthetic from the late 1700s. A piece that rewards close inspection as much as it commands presence from afar.
