21st Century 9 Karat Rose Gold and Diamond Drop-Shape Cesellato Drop Earrings
About the Item
Modern-looking in their simplicity and yet 600-odd years in the making, these 9-karat rose gold and blackened .925 silver earrings are produced using an ancient Albanian technique which was brought to Palermo, Sicily in the fifteenth century.
Carefully selected rose-cut diamonds totalling 3.50 carats are hand-chiselled into the very slightly domed tops of the droplets, which are silver; the base of the earrings are 9-karat gold. The earrings are hinged between the pear-shaped drops.
These drop earrings have post backs with butterfly clips and hang approximately 40 millimetres long. Together they weigh 8.20 grams.
This collection represents an art form which reflects the rich history of Sicily. In the fifteenth century, Albanian immigrants arrived in Palermo, bringing with them a unique method of jewellery-making which has become known as “cesellato”. Their descendants preserved the method over the next 600-odd years, merging it with new materials, fashions and techniques which arrived following each new invasion of the southern Italian island. The FANCS V workshop is situated in the heart of Sicily's capital city, Palermo. The jeweller is a three-generation Sicilian family business owned and run by Simona Elia and her husband Natale Vitale. Created by Natale's grandfather, FANCS V has grown from a goldsmith shop into a design studio where Simona, who trained in Milan, contributes signature collections to complement the custom pieces Natale produces for a dedicated client base.
