Art Deco Egyptian Revival 18k Gold Enamel Scarab Stud Earrings

About the Item

For sale a wonderful pair of 18K gold scarab earrings made during the 1920s, the Art Deco era. In November 1922, the joint efforts of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter, culminated in the opening of the tomb of Tutankhamun, in the remote Valley of the Kings of Egypt. Their remarkable discovery, perhaps the most important archaeological find of the 20th century, aroused interest and excitement around the world. The Egyptian civilization has becoming, once again, the source of inspiration for the figurative arts, literature, fashion and jewelry design. Pyramids, sphinxes, scarabs, and imitations of hieroglyphs became motifs used in jewelry. These beautiful 18K gold earrings feature a greenish blue scarab made of carved turquoise blue faience on each side. They are mounted in gold frames and set on oval - shaped panels which are skillfully enameled with the intricate triangular patches of white, black and green colors. The bright chromatic contrasts of Egyptian art are particularly well suited to the design of these art deco jewels. We are impressed to see the realization of this refined work on such limited space. These earrings are converted from a pair of collar buttons and they have the butterfly closing for pierced ears. Over the history and in ancient Egyptian religion the scarab was the symbol of immortality, resurrection, transformation and protection. The symbolism as well as the exceptional craftmanship make these earrings a wonderful piece to add into your jewelry box. Measurements and condition In good vintage condition.
