Pyritized dinosaur bone and Widmanstätten pattern meteorite slice navette earrings with white diamond pavé, front-back, 18 carat recycled white gold, 0.62 TCW Obelisks of reflective pyritized dinosaur bone and Widmanstätten pattern meteorite slice are elongated and suspended parallel to one another in this pair of front-back ellipse earrings set in 18 carat recycled white gold. PYRITIZED DINOSAUR BONE Name: Pyritized dinosaur bone Origin: Earth Age: 146 to 156 million years old Mohs Hardness: 6.0 - 6.5 Location of find: Caspian Sea, Russia Pyritized dinosaur bone fossils are exclusively found on the banks of the Volga River and Caspian Sea. These fossils are extremely rare as the factors incumbent to their genesis are so incredibly improbable - the dinosaur’s bone structure was surrounded by the perfect conditions for over 145 million years in a marine environment rich in sulphides and specific aquatic micro-life. The crevices within the dinosaur’s bone filled with liquid during the dinosaur’s life, and then posthumously accrued Iron and Sulphur deposits over the course of 146 million to 156 million years. These unique conditions created a mirrored lucence on the surface of the fossil while capturing and preserving the original cell structure of the dinosaur bone. Named after Alois von Widmanstätten, a Viennese scientist who discovered it in 1808, the Widmanstätten pattern is a three-dimensional octahedral structure in the metal that is formed from interleaving bands of kamacite and narrower borders of taenite. The intersections are filled with a mixture of these two alloys. Discovered in melting glacial ice, this Scandinavian meteorite slice is approximately 4.6 billion years old and impacted the Earth circa one million years ago.
