Jade Necklace with Diamond Clasp

About the Item

This very fine jade necklace has been certified by global jade authority, Mason Kay, to be natural and untreated jadeite jade. But anyone who really *knows* jade would need no certificate to inform them that this dense, luminous, below-room-temperature strand of graduated beads (from 4.38mm to 9.31 mm) could only be the product of nature without any further tainting from the hands of man. These beads are highly translucent and mottled, so you get the beauty and luminosity of high translucency together with the fascinating subtle variance between beads and their rich inner-texture. With processed jade —bleached with hydrochloric acid and polymer-impregnated—this subtle variance between beads carved from the same section of stone is gone, replaced by unnatural uniformity. This spectacular and rare necklace celebrates the individual beauty of each precious bead. Three beads, for example, have a higher iron content and as a result display a brownish-earthy color. Bleaching would remove this undesirable "stain" and destroy the integrity of the jade in the process. Here, though, these brownish beads have not been banished and bleached out of existence. They were part of the stone; they are part of the necklace. And that is really what makes this necklace so very special: it is almost a musical composition, this strand of jadeite beads. Each bead carved from the same section of stone, each slightly different, several more different than the others. Yet all the same. But not. I should mention the clasp because it's quite striking. It is a cylindrical-shaped 18k yellow gold clasp with delicate piercing all the way around. There are fifteen 2.4mm round, full-cut diamonds totaling less than ½ carat encircling the barrel; these diamonds are very bright and white with excellent clarity. I didn't grade each one but they appear to be in the F VVS range. It's always a good sign when the tiny diamonds on the clasp of a necklace are of fine quality (and fine cutting). It says, "I belong to an important strand," and indeed this clasp does just that. I will say, the tiny little latch which you push to release the tongue from the barrel of the clasp is so well disguised it can be difficult to find. Once you do, you simply press it and the clasp releases. But because the necklace is 28" in length, you probably won't ever need to use the clasp. Created at some point between the 1960s and 1970s, this midcentury natural and untreated jadeite jade necklace is a very special find.
