Each of the forty 10.5 mm luminous, diaphanous and internally-radiant certified natural and untreated beads that compose this unfathomably rare necklace from the Art Deco period is of the finest possible quality. The polish of each bead is simply magnificent; they slide through your fingers like oiled glass marbles. But it is the color—soft violet, deeper purple, faint spring green, and the color of winter light on snow at four in the afternoon in the Northern hemisphere—that makes one hold one's breath. Did you see the movie Contact with Jodie Foster? After she is transported through a wormhole in the universe and views a distant planet up close for the first time she utters the words, "They should have sent a poet." That is what is needed here to describe with precision the experience of holding, of placing around the neck, of fastening the gold clasp and then of feeling the drape of these heavy, cool beads against the skin. There is no jewel in the world like an extremely fine jade necklace. The nature of the stone itself is such that it transforms as the hands sweep along the dial of the clock, the colors shifting subtly—and sometimes dramatically—as the light changes.
