An antique Edwardian English 9 carat gold long guard necklace chain. This can be worn as a 2/3 rows chain as you please.
"Variously known as a long guard, guard, or muff chain, these were variously used at different periods for suspending ladies' watches, keys to the wine cellar or tea caddy, and latterly for passing through a muff to keep her hands warm.
The common denominator for all of these chains is the length which is usually around 50 -60 inches to facilitate the traditional uses."
