A Georgian long gold chain, of belcher links with a repeat zig-zag pattern. This chain has three barrel clasps and can also be worn as a shorter necklace and two bracelets or one bracelet and a medium length chain, circa 1820. This style of Georgian or Regency chain was at its height of popularity between 1800 and 1840. The Napoleonic wars had lead to a scarcity of gold, therefore jewellers designed pieces that had as much impact as possible, whilst utilising smaller quantities of gold. The chains are hand made, with the patterns being produced by stamping thin gold sheet, which were then curved lengthways and soldered together to form oval or round belcher links. From 1848 onwards more gold deposits were discovered, this lead to increases in weight of chains and had a strong influence on jewellery design in the Victorian period.
