About

This spectacular Austro-Hungarian necklace dates to about 1890. It contains 23 silky smooth cabochon garnet gems, sometimes called ‘carbuncles’. The center stone measures 17.5 x 23.5 mm and the stones around the neck graduate from about 12x7 mm down to 10x14 at the back, where it culminates in a hidden clasp. The metal is silver gilt, beautifully engraved on the back. The necklace is marked with the double swan, a French import mark, the greyhound mark with indicates it was made in Pest (as in Budapest), Hungary of at least 800 silver. The marks indicate that it was made after 1872 and imported into France after 1893. This is a short, choker-style necklace and is just 14 inches long. It was certainly made this way, most likely a custom made piece for a petite lady with big style. Our jeweler could add some links to the back to make it a bit longer, but it might loose something if you add too much.
