About the Item

A rare sterling silver geometric necklace by Bent Gabrielsen for Hans Hansen, 1960s. The necklace is composed of a sterling silver torque with six circular kinetic elements. Signed Hans Hansen, Sterling Silver, Denmark and numbered. The matching bracelet is also available. An unusually minimalist design for the iconic and original Danish firm of Hans Hansen, which started making jewelry in 1932. Bent Gabrielsen, who designed the neckpiece, worked for Hans Hansen from around 1953 until 1969, when he left to set up his workshop with his wife as sole partner. He made most of the company's important designs. In 1964 he won the prestigious Lunning prize. As the chair of the Prize Committee put it: Bent Gabrielsen won the Lunning Prize in 1964. It was considered the "Nobel Prize" of Scandinavian Design at the time. As the head of the Lunning Committee wrote, " Bent Gabrielsen's jewelry carries absolute conviction as to its function...; his handling of materials is so restrained and well considered that one feels this could hardly be otherwise. His jewelry is simple and clearly constructed, often with links connecting naturally with each other so that the complete piece makes up a beautiful whole. Every single detail of his things is worked out. There are no false effects. He does not take the easy way out."
