Three-Strand Akoya Pearl Choker with Diamond Bar Accents in 18 Karat Gold

About the Item

This is a custom-made necklace by Lawrence Poon of Seattle, produced in 1992. It features three rows of 6mm - 6.5mm Akoya cultured pearls. Eight separator plates of 18 karat yellow gold are spaced evenly along the front of the necklace, and the out-facing edge of each plate is bezel-set with two small diamonds. We showed these pearls to our pearl dealer, George Hajjar of Seven Seas Pearls, to get his opinion. He confirmed they are Akoya (not freshwater) and said they are very good luster, and show good size consistency. He describes the color as ivory with a mix of pink, green and creamy tones. The diamonds are at least 0.02 carats each (approximately 1.8mm). We rate them H color and VS1-2 clarity. The total estimated diamond weight is 0.32 carats. The width of the three strands is about 20mm. The inside strand is 16" long and the outside strand is 17" long. This length disparity allows the choker to lie flat around the neck.* If you prefer a different length, let us know and we'll quote you a price for lengthening or shortening to your specifications. The closure is a large 14 karat gold box clasp with a nice raised woven design. The necklace weighs just under 85 grams. The 171 pearls account for most of that, but the 18 karat gold plates weigh 16 grams and the 14 karat gold clasp weighs another 6.5 grams. We acquired this necklace in 2022 and since it's over twenty years old, we had the pearls mixed and restrung. Disassembling gave us a chance to thoroughly polish the plates and the clasp, so the condition of this necklace is excellent. *Note that in order to achieve the desired length of 16", the designer added an extra pearl to each of the three strands on one end of the necklace but not the other. Weird move, but we weren't aware of it until after the necklace came back from the stringer (otherwise we would have told him to hold back three pearls). It has no impact on the wearability or look of the necklace -- it just means the clasp has to be skootched "one pearl over" on the the back of the wearer's neck to center the front properly.
