This 18" Victorian turquoise bead necklace was made right around the turn of the century from magnificent un-processed and unique turquoise beads. The colors range from pale robin's egg blue to light sage green. Every bead displays a beautiful ruddy matrix. Because this turquoise was not "sealed" or otherwise stabilized, the beads are soft and show evidence of their journey through life. But the scrapes, irregularities and little nicks only add to the phenomenal charisma of this piece. I believe these beads to be Manassa turquoise from Colorado or Royston turquoise from Nevada. What I love about the necklace is that it's like wearing the American Southwest around your neck. It looks like rock and sky and cactus and earth and sand and sunset all strung together on black silk. A chunky, decorative clasp and matching hardware component for the dangling pale blue focal point bead are crafted from 9ct gold; the perfect color of gold to match the lightest matrix. These very old and beloved beads may show some scars but they shine beautifully. To help protect the beads and maintain their shine, I have lightly coated them with the highest quality preservationist wax. This wax is used by museums around the world to protect everything from beads like these to fragile paper documents. The necklace has been freshly restrung, matching exactly the method used previously but substituting the thin old cotton thread for much more durable thick silk. In addition, knots have been added between the beads to cushion them. Now it is ready for another century of wear and enjoyment.
