About the Item

A sophisticated Art Deco diamond and emerald geometric link necklace in platinum and white gold, 1930s. This ravishing jewel is designed as a sequence of 53 individually-set Old European brilliant-cut, Transitional round brilliant-cut and old single-cut diamonds alternating with openwork lozenge panels grain-set throughout with 288 old single-cut diamonds. The necklace is doubly secured with an emerald and diamond three-stone clasp and a safety chain fitting. Diamonds: approximately 14 carats in total (estimated), F-J color (assessed), VS-SI clarity (assessed). Largest Diamond: approximately 2.00 carats (average diameter 8.42mm, height 4.37mm), H/I color (assessed), SI2 clarity (assessed). Emerald approximately 1.40 carats, green color. Later Portuguese import marks for 950 platinum and 9kt (375/1,000) gold. Dimensions: 45.5 x 1.0 cm. Gross weight: 30.4g. Reflecting the flamboyant and playful attitudes of the post-war Jazz Age, the Art Deco period is one of the most popular and enduring periods of jewelry design, in line with the emancipation and prosperity lived at the time. Taking its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels that was held in Paris in 1925, the Art Deco movement marked a daring move away from the delicate garland styles of the preceding Edwardian and Belle Époque periods. Defined by bold geometric shapes, angular lines and graphic color schemes, jewels of the era took inspiration from the contemporary Cubist movement and many other sources. Archaeological discoveries awakened an interest in Ancient Egypt and Mesoamerica, whilst African and East-Asian art also influenced designers. First appearing in jewelry in the late 1890s/early 1900s, by the 1920s platinum had replaced gold and silver as the metal of choice and was used in conjunction with diamonds to achieve an “icy” aesthetic. In line with the geometric nature of the wider Art Deco movement, square cuts, such as the Asscher, emerald and baguette cuts grew in prominence during this period. Unusual combinations of gemstones were highly prized, with turquoise, black onyx, orange to red coral and blue lapis-lazuli juxtaposed with colorless diamonds and rock crystal to create bold, colorful pieces – but rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls were also popular. When you imagine the legendary flapper girls of the Roaring 1920s, their quintessential accoutrements—long strands of pearls and graceful, swinging earrings—spring immediately to mind.
