17th Century Venice Lion of St Marks Coin Diamond 18K Gold Pendant

About the Item

An authentic silver "1/2 Ducato" coin from Venice depicting the Venetian Lion of St Mark is set within a "wire and jawan" handmade 18K gold (with silver backing behind) setting in this Steven Battelle designed pendant. There is a 2.5 mm VS1 diamond set below and several "jawan" granulation ornamenting the sides, all handmade by a master artisan. The winged lion holding a Bible is the symbol of the city of Venice and formerly of the Republic of Venice. The lion is one of the four living creatures described in verse of the Apocalypse of St John 4:7 as having a place around the throne of the Almighty that are chosen as symbols of the four evangelists. The lion also symbolizes the power of the Evangelist's word, the wings symbolize the spiritual elevation, while the halo is the traditional Christian symbol of holiness. The opposite side of the coin depicts St Mark presenting the kneeling doge (Chief Magistrate and leader of Venice) with a staff with pennant and cross. This coin was issued during the realm of Domenico Contarini, the 104th doge of Venice between 1659-1675. This pendant is sent with a laminated lifetime coin certificate of authenticity. Please note size relative to the dime. The handmade hammered 18K gold chain shown is not included, but can be ordered additionally. It comes in 18”, 20”, and 24” lengths. We discount our chains 20% when ordered with a pendant. A beautiful Lion of Venice from antiquity!
