Antique 14K Gold Religious Chestpiece Pendant
About the Item
This rare antique mid-19th century religious piece of jewelry is a chestpiece pendant, created in 14 karat gold. Designed with very fine filigree, cannetille work and jasseron chains. This type of religious jewelry, the so-called 'borstzeuge', was reserved for more wealthy families, who belonged to the richer ones. Chestpieces were worn on a thin gold chain or black velvet ribbon. They are often attributed to Noord-Brabant, but have also been worn elsewhere. Catholic women usually had a cross pendant on their chestpiece. The 'borstzeuge' is in its original condition.
Striking is the unparalleled fine technique of the "wire and cannetille work" in 14 and 18 karat gold and in silver that Dutch goldsmiths have been able to make with great craftsmanship. This jewel represent a varied and rich historical Dutch cultural heritage, worn by women in some parts of the Netherlands. It was part of the regional costume.
The jewel is in very good condition and measures 24 centimeters and the upper shield piece is 9.2 centimeters wide and 4.5 centimeters in height. The pendant weighs 24.22 grams.
