About the Item

In the years around 1900, platinum was the most expensive precious metal known – in fact, it was much more expensive than gold. Often, only thin layers of platinum would be rolled onto gold in order to give the appearance of a platinum jewel. To find Edwardian pieces crafted from massive platinum is therefore much rarer and always a sign of utmost luxury. This unusually large Edwardian pendant is one particularly luxurious piece; no expenses or efforts were spared in its manufacture. A large bouton-shaped natural pearl of rosy-grey lustre is at the centre of the pendant. Within each field of the trefoil design, a large old European cut diamond of approx. 0.70 ct each is set. Delicate knife wires fill the trefoil, their lightness made possible only by the great hardness of the platinum, which holds shape even in the finest of designs. A plethora of further diamonds shimmer on the surrounding frame. With its costly platinum setting and executed in festive white materials, the pendant was once intended to accompany its wearer to balls and other elegant evening affairs. In the gleam of early electric lighting, the platinum and diamonds were presented to their best avantage: with every movement, the light strikes several diamonds at once, creating a veritable firework of glittering reflections. Today, some 110 years later, the jewel is ready to adorn a new wearer. The back of the pendant shows that it once likely had dual use as a pendant and brooch. However, the original removable brooch mounting is lost.
